NDIS registration groups explained, and why the numbers matter

A registration group is the NDIS Commission’s way of saying what a provider is allowed to deliver. Once you can read the numbers, provider websites get a lot easier to judge.

What a registration group is

When a provider registers with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, they do not get approved for the NDIS in general. They get approved for specific registration groups, each with a number and a name.

Each group has its own requirements. Some can be signed off with a verification audit, which is lighter. Others require a full certification audit against the NDIS Practice Standards, with an approved auditor coming in and looking at how the business actually runs.

A provider can be perfectly legitimate and still be unable to help you. They may simply not hold the group your support sits under.

The groups we are registered for

Here are ours, with what each one actually means in a normal week. Every one of them is accepting referrals today.

Group 115 is worth a note. From 1 July 2026 it requires registration, so an unregistered provider cannot deliver Supported Independent Living at all. There is a separate article on that change.

What the numbers tell you about a provider

Scope

  • Three groups is a different business to twenty.
  • A narrow list usually means focus.
  • A wide list usually means scale.
  • Neither is better. Both are legitimate.

Honesty

  • Most provider websites do not publish their groups.
  • It is not a secret and it is not complicated.
  • So hiding it is a choice, not an oversight.
  • A registered provider can send the list the same day.

What you want to avoid is a provider whose website implies it does everything but whose registration says otherwise.

Groups we deliberately do not hold. We are not registered for Support Coordination, Plan Management, Therapeutic Supports, Behaviour Support or high intensity daily personal activities. If you need those, we will say so and point you elsewhere rather than stretch to fit.

Registration groups are not the same as your plan categories

This trips a lot of people up. Your NDIS plan is written in budget categories, usually Core, Capacity Building and Capital. Registration groups are a different list, used by the Commission rather than by your plan.

So the language in your plan will not match the language on a provider’s registration, and that is normal. If you are trying to work out whether a provider can deliver what your plan funds, the fastest route is to describe what you want to happen in plain words and let them map it. That is their job.

How to check any provider

  • Ask for the legal entity name their registration sits under, which is often different to the trading name.
  • Ask which groups they hold, by number.
  • Ask whether they were verified or certified, and by which auditor.
  • Confirm it with the NDIS Commission on 1800 035 544.

Ours, for comparison

Serenica Support is a registered business name of Warsan Group Pty Ltd, ABN 36 645 979 906, audited against the NDIS Practice Standards, NDIS registration number 4-LOHEV53.

Eleven groups, all listed above with their numbers, and all of them on our services page too. You should be able to get the same paragraph out of any provider you are considering.
